ICD-10 Delayed

icd-10If you are a SMART customer you need to know.

It was recently announced that the required transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10-CM/PCS (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition, Clinical Modification /Procedure Coding System) has been delayed until October 2015.

ICD-10 Coding Basics Medicare Fee-For-Service National Provider Call

Learn while you wait! Signup today for ICD-10 coding basics on Wednesday, June 4, at 1:30-3pm ET. The Medicare Learning Network will host an ICD-10 Coding Basics National Provider Call.

Who does this transition effect?

ICD-10 is code sets that are used to report medical diagnoses and inpatient procedures. This is a requirement that is applicable to every organization that is covered by HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act). Organizations that are covered by HIPAA include healthcare providers that conduct certain transactions in electronic form. Some of the affected include Behavioral Health Organizations, some government organizations and outpatient substance abuse treatment facilities.

For those for whom DMS-V is applicable, an official announcement has yet to be made about how this postponement might affect the DSM-V change that was scheduled to coincide with the ICD-10 transition, originally scheduled for Oct 1, 2014. SMART will release further information as it is made available.

Change can be good.

This inevitable and required change in code sets will influence the following factors:

  • Restructures reporting of certain diagnoses
  • A single code can convey or represent more information
  • Few codes will be needed to effectively describe a multi-symptom condition
  • More consistent code terminology
  • Covers newly discovered conditions and newly developed treatments

How do you transition?

Now that the transition deadline has been extended 1-year all applicable providers have an opportunity to more thoroughly prepare their plan moving forward. One good place to start is by visiting the AMA (American Medical Association) website for a list of guidelines for getting started and how to move fluidly through the process.

SMART Associate raises Autism Awareness

Raising Funds – Autism Awareness

Autism-Awareness-CandiApril 23, 2014 – April is Autism Awareness Month. SMART Management’s Provider Relations Representative Candi Arevalo and her family are participating in The Autism Project Walk. This will be held at Goddard Park on Sunday, April 27th in honor of her wonderful son Tyler. If you would like to make a donation to help her team reach their goal please visit their fundraising page. No donation is too small … every dollar counts!!!

If you or someone you know are interested in participating, the check-in time is at 9:00 am and the walk starts at 10:00 am. However, you don’t have to participate in the walk to enjoy the Family Fun Day. This includes a reptile show, a visit from the URI Rams Football Team, cotton candy, and popcorn, obstacle course, face painting, arts and crafts, a marketplace and much more!

Autism affects a child’s ability to communicate, understand language, play and build relationships. Candi’s son, Tyler was diagnosed with Autism at the age of five. He has struggled over the years with sensory issues, communication, and overall socialization.

Fundraising organizations like The Autism Project and Autism Speaks are there to advocate, teach and support not only children but their families as well.

Candi explained that “Thanks to these organizations, Tyler has progressed enough to be a member of the Unified Special Olympics Basketball Team, a sport he absolutely loves. He has actually become renowned for his famous 3 point shot!! The support that Tyler receives from autism programs has helped him become more independent. It has also allowed him to overcome some of the many challenges of Autism.

Autism-Awareness-logoTyler has been on the honor roll every quarter since middle school! I’m grateful for the strides Tyler has made throughout his life. I attribute much of this to the wonderful programs that fundraising for Autism provides.”
