Medical Leadership University

medical-leadership-university SMART is the management company and electronic health record (EHR) provider for each of Discovery House’s 18 clinic locations. This spring Discovery House Medical Associates were invited to SMART Management, Inc. for a two-day Medical Leadership University in Providence, RI.

SMART hosts Leadership Universities for Discovery House Program Directors and Clinical Supervisors annually, and are now hoping to add the Medical Leadership University as a recurring company-wide event.  This was an excellent opportunity for SMART’s Home Office associates to connect with the Medical Associates for a few days of relationship building, some entertaining activities, a strategic plan overview, exploration of regional opportunities and discussions on Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT).

SMART Management recognized and commended the high level of leadership and expertise that is dedicated to the patients and communities which Discovery House serves.

Supporting The Fix

the-fix-posterHave you ever wanted to help someone to better understand addiction and those who are affected by this discouraging disease? SMART’s partner Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Division of Substance Abuse Treatment, has helped to further demystify addiction with their contributions to a recent award-winning documentary “The Fix“.

In 2014, The Fix was named Best Documentary at the SOHO International Film Festival, AFI DOCS Official Selection, Official Selection at the Maine International Film Festival and Heartland Film Festival Official Selection. These prestigious awards are helping to draw more attention to addictions and associated illnesses. The rampant spread of Hep C was a huge focus. Throughout the course of this documentary filmmakers primarily followed the lives of three patients affected by addiction and Hep C.

There are many paths that can lead individuals into addition. No one starts out thinking that they wont be able to stop. One featured substance abuse treatment counselor made the point that, “It is hard to find people in these programs that have not been affected by violence.” A patient of the program shared that his path to addiction began after he was molested as a young age. Those affected by addiction unfortunately have often times  arrived in that troubled place in a desperate attempt to escape a damaging life event.1,2,3

Associates of SMART Management gathered recently for a company movie hour / lunch n’ learn in support of this powerful film. We saw first hand why The Fix received so many awards and critical acclaim. Everyone was touched by the stories that the featured patients shared and would like to encourage others to share this film with their co-workers, friends, family and the public.

We would like to thank Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Division of Substance Abuse Treatment, for their dedication to patient care and for taking the time to help produce this film, which is invaluable testament to the will and strength of patients on their road to recovery.

L-R: Peter Morris CFOO of Discovery House /SMART, Michael Rizzi President & CEO of CODAC and Susan Storti, PHD, RN Admin Coordinator for RI Opioid Treatment Program Health Homes

SMART Management/Discovery House CFOO Peter Morris spoke during the OTP Health Homes presentation at the 2015 AATOD Conference. Peter presented along side Michael Rizzi, President and CEO of CODAC and Susan Storti, PHD, RN Administrative Coordinator for Rhode Island Opioid Treatment Program Health Homes Initiative.

States that are interested in establishing Medicaid health homes programs need to be prepared to submit a state plan amendment (SPA) and prepare themselves for the in-depth process that is involved. Peter provided a review of the OTP Health Home Revenue and Cost Analysis as it pertained to the development of the State Plan Amendment (SPA) and ongoing financial components of this initiative. Requirements vary from state-to-state but for the purposes of his presentation, Peter focused on Rhode Island, the state where SMART and Discovery House are headquartered.

Also covered were the sustainability of the initiative, State budget factors and an analysis of claims data surrounding the three major focuses from a cost perspective: hospital admissions /re-admissions, emergency room visits and skilled nursing facility admissions. The desired outcome of this initiative is an improved focus on the healthcare of individuals, thereby creating a reduction in healthcare costs.
