Striving to be the best EHR Software for OTPs

SMART-Strategy-Summit-Best EHR Software-Partner-Meeting

SMART Associates and Partners during Strategy Summit

SMART Management, Inc. considers our partners an essential element of being the best EHR Software for opioid treatment programs. Because of this, in late-September, SMART hosted the 2017 SMART Strategy Summit. The Summit brought together leadership teams from SMART Partners all over the U.S. to collaborate on the evolution of the SMART Solution.

Historically, SMART’s EHR software has been an on-premise solution. Today, it is is a 100% paperless cloud-based tool that does so much more than just patient record keeping. Small clinics and large enterprise organizations rely on the SMART Solution to help streamline operations and provide best in class patient care.

What exactly is SMART doing to be the best EHR software for OTPs?

Partner discussing needs with SMART’s IT Director, Mason Snyder

Listening. We take what we learn from our Partners and work with our Development Teams to integrate their feedback into our electronic health record. The result is a continuously improving technology that grows with the treatment facilities we serve. Following our SMART Strategy Summit in 2013, we set in motion a variety of Partner requests. The request for increased EHR speed is one example.

SMART’s New Cloud product addresses the requests to increase EHR speed. Several of this year’s Summit attendees have migrated to the cloud while many others have not. Partners who have migrated thoughtfully shared their experiences with everyone in an open forum. Then SMART’s IT Director, Mason Snyder, followed with a deeper dive into the new SMART infrastructure, discussing the power and benefits of integrating Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Aurora. Companies such as Philips, Netflix, Instagram, and Dropbox, trust these integrated services to increase speed, lower costs, and improve scalability.

SMART’s shift to AWS will afford partners several advantages, most notably:

  • A highly scalable fully managed database service
  • Six real-time redundant backups
  • Immediate access to the latest SMART features
  • Reduction in equipment cost and maintenance responsibility
  • Improved reliability, security, and performance with up to 99.99995% up-time

More “Agile” than ever

Another Partner request is for more predictable development timeframes. SMART is focusing on a new method of software development to be more predictable than ever. From here, we can provide more accurate estimates and plan our development to meet the strategic planning goals.

Saying that we listen and incorporate Partner feedback is nice, but how exactly does that work? In one word; Agile. SMART has adopted an Agile development methodology. This is a proven method used by companies like Adobe and GE. It allows our teams to be agile and respond to the continuously changing needs of our Partners. Moreover, Agile is about working smarter and generating more value. Because of this, SMART Partners benefit from an EHR that has greater flexibility and is delivered more predictably.

Great Changes to Methadone Maintenance Treatment in NJ

New Methadone Maintenance Treatment location-JBRC-for-web

CEO Alan Oberman at new JBRC methadone maintenance treatment location

SMART’s EHR partner, New Jersey-based addiction treatment provider, John Brooks Recovery Center (JBRC), is improving access to methadone maintenance treatment. Their recent relocation, the opening of 2 new locations, and a new jail-based program represent some of the significant changes that patients can expect moving forward. Alan Oberman, JBRC CEO and long-time recovery advocate, shared that “This project began in 2007, and it is an example of what can be achieved with vision and perseverance.” He went on to say, “I will never forget the faces of our clients when they first walked through the doors. It made it all worth it.”

A Move To Help More Patients

JBRC’s previous facility is a 100-year-old building located in the crowded heart of the Atlantic City tourist district. As they helped more individuals in the community, the facility lacked the space to accommodate everyone in need. Since they serve over 500 clients, patients would have to wait on the sidewalk. Their recent move was the best solution to express appreciation and consideration for patients and the community.

Consolidating Methadone Maintenance Treatment and Other Services

Inside-JBRC

Inside new JBRC location

One new JBRC facility in Pleasantville has combined medication-assisted treatment (MAT), intensive outpatient (IOP), admissions, and administration under one roof. This has already shown improvement in communication and morale among their 70-person staff. Moreover, they are now able to accommodate more individuals in need. This location treats around 600 MAT clients and 115 IOP clients. The other new site, JBRC of Atlantic City, treats 325 MAT and 30 IOP patients. Alan Oberman noted, “We have been able to treat almost two hundred more clients.”

Project Kick Start

New Jersey’s first jail-based methadone maintenance treatment program is Project Kick Start. Atlantic County Jail Warden, Geraldine Cohen, and Alan Oberman worked together for the past five years to start this program. The Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services funded the pilot program. Alan explained in a recent press release that “The timing for the program is just right. We are in the midst of an opioid epidemic that affects approximately 75% of the inmates at the jail. At John Brooks, we had a mobile methadone bus designed for physical examinations and the dispensing of methadone that we were not using plus excess revenue on a State contract .”

Giving to Sojourner House Families

sojourner-houseFor SMART’s community awareness team, the Sunshine Group, the holiday season is a great time to help others. Thanks to the efforts of Sojourner House, we were able to sponsor a family in need from their Share the Spirit Program. This program has been helping families with financial needs for the past 10 years. Manager of Immigration Advocacy, Gloria Greenfield explained that “Many of the families are getting back on their feet, are jobless, or they had been relying on the abuser for financial support.” This year was Sojourner House largest drive to date. Organizations, business, families, and individual donors supported 39 families, totaling 115 individuals.  “It’s such an amazing feeling to see the client’s faces when they realize that their holidays are totally different than what they expected and that their children will receive gifts…” said Gloria.

Sharing the Spirit

SMART Associates gathered to pack gifts before delivering to Sojourner House.

After participating for several years, this has now become a holiday tradition for us at SMART. We were thrilled to collect and give wishlist items to local families who are starting over.  As each gift was brought in, we began to see a trend. Everyone who participated not only gave the selected wish list item but also gave a little extra. Being able to give to those who have little, reminds us all of what really matters.

About Sojourner House

For 40 years, Sojourner House has helped victims of domestic violence. As a comprehensive domestic violence agency, they primarily serve Providence and northern Rhode Island. Their services include advocacy, shelter, referrals, and other resources.  Additionally, Sojourner House works in surrounding communities providing violence prevention education programs.Learn more

Maine Helps Addiction Treatment Centers

January 12, 2017 – Recently, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services awarded funds to addiction treatment centers, including Discovery House of Calais and Acadia Hospital of Bangor. This is a triumph for Maine addiction treatment centers. They spent many years defending their very existence.

The Role of Addiction Treatment Centers

program-director-brent-miller-speaks-out-defending-addiction-treatment-centers

Discovery House Program Director, Brent Miller, speaking out in a 2013 Bangor City Council meeting.

Discovery House Program Director, Brent Miller frequently met with community members and state officials. The goal was to increase funding, decrease overdoses, and to correct the stigma associated with addiction and forms of treatment. After countless media interviews, town hall meetings, and organization collaborations, he brought Discovery House to the forefront of the fight. Brent became a voice for patients, families, and even competitor clinics that were facing the challenge of being defunded. As he told The Bangor Daily News, “I think people are starting to understand that opiate addiction treatment is essential to solving the problem and getting a handle on the disease…”

Enough is Enough

Communities nationwide are reluctant when hearing of a methadone clinic opening in their town. The mantra, “not in my backyard,” has become a typical response. However, we know more about the nature of addiction now. Unfortunately, many have learned this through personal tragedy and loss. In 2012, the overdose count reached 163 people in the State of Maine. Enough was enough for Mainers when overdoses in 2016 exceeded 270. Treatment needed to be an effort supported by officials and members of the community alike.

Purpose of the Funds

DHHS funds awarded a total of $2.4 million. The sole purpose is to support medication-assisted treatment programs. This money will not increase the allowable patient count at these treatment programs. However, it will help to fund treatment for low-income and non-insured patients. This is excellent progress toward supporting those already in recovery, and an encouraging sign for those seeking recovery.

State Funding Helps Warm Handoff Program

As a Center of Excellence, Alliance Medical Services of Pennsylvania was recently awarded $500,000 in state funding from Cambria County. Thanks to this funding, they are poised to treat up to 50 additional patients and participate in the Warm Handoff Program.

Warm Handoff Program Decreasing Overdose

In the fall of 2016, Pennsylvania established the Warm Handoff Program. The aim is to increase interactions between recovery professionals and patients after they have suffered an opiate overdose. Individuals who do not receive follow-up care are more likely to relapse. According to Gary Tennis, Secretary of the Pennsylvania DDAP, “There is a very high risk of a repeat overdose in the period right after a person leaves the emergency room for a drug overdose. Our aim is to avoid that risk by getting the survivor directly to treatment without hitting the street at all.”

Another Gap

The inspiration for the Warm Handoff Program was the life-saving drug Naloxone. After years of seeing lives lost to overdose, police officers were ready for a change. Since Naloxone’s availability in 2014, Pennsylvania police have been able to save 1,600 lives. However, this created another gap in the system of care. Tennis explained that “Many people who would have died are now being saved in the ER, but the protocol there has been to release people once they are stabilized or at most given a card with a referral for treatment.”  As the Chairman of the National Alliance for Model State Drug Laws, Tennis and his staff reached out to ER’s to begin development of the new program. From there, recovery advocates and professionals like the staff of Alliance Medical Services were able to start providing more assistance.
