Giving to Sojourner House Families

sojourner-houseFor SMART’s community awareness team, the Sunshine Group, the holiday season is a great time to help others. Thanks to the efforts of Sojourner House, we were able to sponsor a family in need from their Share the Spirit Program. This program has been helping families with financial needs for the past 10 years. Manager of Immigration Advocacy, Gloria Greenfield explained that “Many of the families are getting back on their feet, are jobless, or they had been relying on the abuser for financial support.” This year was Sojourner House largest drive to date. Organizations, business, families, and individual donors supported 39 families, totaling 115 individuals.  “It’s such an amazing feeling to see the client’s faces when they realize that their holidays are totally different than what they expected and that their children will receive gifts…” said Gloria.

SMART Associates gathered to pack gifts before delivering to Sojourner House.

After participating for several years, this has now become a holiday tradition for us at SMART. We were thrilled to collect and give wishlist items to local families who are starting over.  As each gift was brought in, we began to see a trend. Everyone who participated not only gave the selected wish list item but also gave a little extra. Being able to give to those who have little, reminds us all of what really matters.

This summer our Community Awareness Team hosted a SMART breakfast fundraiser to benefit the Sunaay Foundation. This non-profit organization in New Delhi, India provides educational opportunities to less fortunate children in the region.

At the front of the room, our team presented an inspirational and educational video about the foundation. This featured students of the learning center and Sunaay Founder Richha Sharma. The video explains that among the many unique qualities of this learning center, sessions are held entirely outdoors. This helps to keep costs low and to ensure that all donations go to helping the children directly.

Our team personally, planned, purchased, baked, cooked and served up an amazing breakfast to SMART Associates. Everyone made a reasonable monetary contribution. The associate turnout at this latest SMART Community Awareness Fundraiser was great. Moreover, everyone who attended is thrilled for the opportunity to do good while being treated to a delicious breakfast.

About Sunaay Foundation

“Sunaay” stems from the word “Suneeti.” It is an initiative of like-minded individuals who have agreed to work towards a common cause, to empower underprivileged, uneducated children to live meaningful and self-reliant lives. Based out of New Delhi, India, they are involved with imparting primary education. This is accomplished through an outdoor makeshift, multi-graded, interactive learning program.  Students are underprivileged children aged between 2 -12 years.

Sunaay endeavors to ignite the minds of less fortunate children and spark a desire for them to learn. They use non-conventional, easy to relate tools to help them understand the basic concepts of Hindi, English (both spoken and written) and maths. They also educate them on matters of personal hygiene and social environment. Learn more
