Great Changes to Methadone Maintenance Treatment in NJ

SMART’s EHR partner, New Jersey-based addiction treatment provider, John Brooks Recovery Center (JBRC), is improving access to methadone maintenance treatment. Their recent relocation, the opening of 2 new locations, and a new jail-based program represent some of the significant changes that patients can expect moving forward. Alan Oberman, JBRC CEO and long-time recovery advocate, shared that “This project began in 2007, and it is an example of what can be achieved with vision and perseverance.” He went on to say, “I will never forget the faces of our clients when they first walked through the doors. It made it all worth it.”

A Move To Help More Patients

JBRC’s previous facility is a 100-year-old building located in the crowded heart of the Atlantic City tourist district. As they helped more individuals in the community, the facility lacked the space to accommodate everyone in need. Since they serve over 500 clients, patients would have to wait on the sidewalk. Their recent move was the best solution to express appreciation and consideration for patients and the community.

Consolidating Methadone Maintenance Treatment and Other Services

Inside new JBRC location

One new JBRC facility in Pleasantville has combined medication-assisted treatment (MAT), intensive outpatient (IOP), admissions, and administration under one roof. This has already shown improvement in communication and morale among their 70-person staff. Moreover, they are now able to accommodate more individuals in need. This location treats around 600 MAT clients and 115 IOP clients. The other new site, JBRC of Atlantic City, treats 325 MAT and 30 IOP patients. Alan Oberman noted, “We have been able to treat almost two hundred more clients.”

Project Kick Start

New Jersey’s first jail-based methadone maintenance treatment program is Project Kick Start. Atlantic County Jail Warden, Geraldine Cohen, and Alan Oberman worked together for the past five years to start this program. The Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services funded the pilot program. Alan explained in a recent press release that “The timing for the program is just right. We are in the midst of an opioid epidemic that affects approximately 75% of the inmates at the jail. At John Brooks, we had a mobile methadone bus designed for physical examinations and the dispensing of methadone that we were not using plus excess revenue on a State contract .”

SMART Management Newsletter – Spring 2009

John Brooks Recovery Center (JBRC)The John Brooks Recovery Center (JBRC) was founded in 1969 in Atlantic City by a group of six Atlantic City residents with the assistance of the Episcopalian Diocese of New Jersey. Today, JBRC is a comprehensive, multi-modality, Atlantic City based addiction treatment facility with 125 employees treating up to 700 patients at any given time. Under the direction of CEO Alan Oberman, JBRC operates two residential and four outpatient treatment programs, as well as mobile treatment with a 40 foot bus that dispenses methadone and Suboxone® to addicts at the local rescue mission and another inner city “spot”.

JBRC has been a customer of SMART for several years and uses the software throughout its facilities including the mobile unit. According to Alan Oberman, “The SMART software is easy to use, is very helpful for quality assurance, compliance, service reminders and for billing procedures and comparison of services. With a budget in excess of $8 million, we need to have continuous, up-to-date data to stay on track.”

Alan is a life-long resident of New Jersey. He holds a Masters in Social Work and is a licensed alcohol and drug clinician with more than twenty years experience in counseling, program administration and private practice. He believes strongly in the mission of JBRC to provide quality, scientifically based, individualized substance abuse treatment services to NJ residents for the reduction and elimination of the harm caused by substance abuse. Some of his goals for JBRC include establishing new residential facilities and expanding the outpatient services in other communities.

Michael Carruthers, Assistant Director SMART Software Division, stated, “We are very grateful for our relationship with the team at John Brooks Recovery Center. They say that life is a Journey; and when you work with Alan Oberman, you are sure to learn a thing or two – whether it is about Woodstock in 1969 (Alan has a classic picture in his office of him, long hair and all, enjoying being stuck in a traffic jam at Woodstock) or more importantly how to set a vision for your team and make it happen in a systematic way. We would also be missing the mark if we did not mention his right hand man, Bob Addesso, who helps keep the wheels moving in their large operation.”

JRBC is a fine example of the SMART customers who have taken a leadership role in the treatment of substance abuse in their respective areas. We are pleased to have the opportunity to work with Alan Oberman and the entire team at JBRC, and we look forward to assisting them as they continue to serve the residents of New Jersey.
