Ending Stigma – AATOD 2016

smart-booth-ending-stigma-aatod-2016The AATOD 2016 Conference recently adjourned at the Marriott Waterfront in Baltimore, MD. Organizers reported record attendance at this year’s conference. As a result, attendees, presenters, and exhibitors enjoyed networking with more opioid treatment professionals than ever before. SMART Associates were excited for the chance to spend face-to-face time with customers from across the country and to meet new attendees.

New Strategies – Disorders, Stigma, Recovery

Related learning and networking sessions spanned all five days of this outstanding conference. Treatment professionals had the opportunity to learn more about co-occurring disorders, opioid overdose prevention and a variety of other current issues.

The workshop showcased poetry, music, painting, and other art forms. These were examples of how art can not only aid in the recovery process, but also can serve as a way to bring about understanding and end stigma.

Appreciating Dedicated Treatment Professionals

customer-appreciation-party-aatod-2016-american-visionary-arts-museumIn line with years past, Clinical Science, Vista Pharm and SMART Management, Inc. hosted another exciting customer appreciation party. Customers ascended upon the American Visionary Arts Museum Halloween night for an evening of art appreciation, dinner and surprises! Guests enjoyed touring the multi-floor visionary museum leisurely throughout the evening. Finally, the night concluded with a grand raffle drawing. This included an Apple Watch, FitBit, wireless bluetooth speaker, wireless travel charging station and even a Polaroid camera. This was a great opportunity for professionals to relax and enjoy informal networking in a fun atmosphere.

Congrats to CODAC, First Center of Excellence for Opioid Treatment

codac-behavioral-healthcare-locationWe’re proud to shine the spotlight on CODAC, providing opioid treatment as well as recovery and prevention resources to individuals, families, and communities.  Recently, the state deemed CODAC as the first “Center of Excellence” regarding the treatment of opioid use disorders.

Rhode Island health officials estimate 20,000 Rhode Islanders are addicted to some form of opioid. However, only a few thousand are getting medication assisted treatment. Given the number of people affected by addiction, there is a shortage of certified physicians. Currently, R.I. only has a total of 171 buprenorphine prescribers.

Increasing Opioid Treatment Access

Governor Raimondo advocates for the access of buprenorphine (Suboxone) and the availability of psychiatrists, social workers, and recovery coaches.  “Rhode Island’s first Center of Excellence will make it easier for patients with opioid use disorders…,” offers Raimondo.

CODAC provides Methadone, Naltrexone, or Suboxone for patients coming into treatment, so physicians can work with patients to choose to best treatment option for each person.  The Centers for Excellence model helps compensate for the shortage of certified professionals. Rebecca Boss, acting director of the Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals celebrates CODAC for “recognizing overdose as a public health crisis and moving swiftly to complete the application process.”

About 1,700 Rhode Islanders died of drug overdoses between 2006 and 2014.  In 2014, Rhode Island had the sixth highest rate of overdose deaths per 100,000 residents in the country.  The US Centers for Disease Control blames a majority of drug deaths on prescription opioids and heroin.

Primary Care Providers Needed

Patients may walk into a Center of Excellence or be referred. From there, patients are stabilized, given treatment, and referred to a care provider in the community. Advocates hope the design will help primary care doctors treat a growing number of opioid dependent or addicted people. Centers are able to cater to patients who may need initial intensive care but do not require in-patient care.

Rhode Island is not alone in battling citizen opioid addiction. Connecticut recently deployed a three-year plan to combat addiction based on Yale University research.  In the month of August alone, 27% of those admitted to the New Haven outpatient clinic were diagnosed with opioid-use disorder.  As US Attorney, Peter Neronha recently pointed out, the numbers of those in need may be obscured.  “Those potentially at risk of death were brought back by Narcan.”  Naloxone stops the effects of heroin or opioid overdose, stripping the opioid receptor site, and restoring breathing.  “When we realize how many times Narcan is being administered, we start to get a sense of how deadly this problem really is,” offers Neronha.

About CODAC

Spectrum Health Care’s New EHR

Spectrum-Health-Care-Team-During-SMART-Training-copy SMART is honored to announce that Spectrum Health Care, Inc. has chosen the SMART Solution as their EHR of choice. Our EHR has been implemented in their clinic in Jersey City, NJ. Spectrum Health has been providing outpatient opioid treatment services to the people of Hudson County since 1984. SMART welcomes this CARF-Accredited opioid treatment provider to our family of software customers.

It was a joy meeting the clinic staff and to learning more about their individual needs and experiences. We worked side-by-side with them to configure the software to their needs. Then we establish system settings to support their workflow and increase efficiency in daily operations. With any implementation, there is a great deal of information to collect, transfer, and protect. And training on any new EHR involves a fair amount of one-on-one guidance. This ensures that the partner’s needs are thoroughly captured and that goals are clearly expressed. Both teams were pleased with the outcome and are excited for the future this new partnership.
