“The SMART system has enabled us to communicate more effectively throughout the program. Patient files are easily accessible with the press of a button and we are better able to coordinate patient care initiatives. The system is simplistic enough for anyone to grasp even if they are not the most computer savvy. It has modernized our processes and assisted us in providing quality patient care.”

The Change of an Era – Discovery House

In December, the Discovery House program directors came to SMART headquarters for the final Leadership University. The group of Discovery House clinics is SMART’s longest standing EHR customer and was managed by SMART until November.  After 24 years of ongoing collaboration, SMART and Discovery House succeeded in aligning a proprietary EHR product to the daily operations and management of the 19 Discovery House clinics in four unique states. The corporate mission and commitment to providing comprehensive, quality and holistic services for persons affected by addiction has come full circle.

Discovery House remains a leader in Outpatient Treatment and saving lives. SMART contributed to the success of the clinics and Discovery House served as a window to clinic requirements and challenges. SMART’s President/CEO David L. Piccoli, II said, “It takes great pride and deep emotion to build and lead an organization committed to saving lives… Discovery House has touched so many patients, families, and communities over the years and has always remained true to our core mission.” Year-end 2015 marks the changing of roles in this successful long-term collaboration. Discovery House will proceed under the care and management of the acclaimed network of Acadia Healthcare’ Community Treatment Centers.

This leadership university was a great opportunity for continued support and unity during this transition. On the final day of the gathering it was evident that the organizations have developed a strong and lasting bond.  SMART looks forward to a continued partnership with Discovery House as a software customer and wish them all the best as they prepare to grow with Acadia.

This move allows us, more than ever before, to be 100% focused on creating and maintaining the best software product available to help our partners operate at the highest level possible. Our team is energized to bring you more of what you love about SMART and will strive to improve where needed with dedicated resources to ensure that you are, not just satisfied, but downright delighted.

John Brooks Recovery Center (JBRC)

SMART Management Newsletter – Spring 2009

John Brooks Recovery Center (JBRC)The John Brooks Recovery Center (JBRC) was founded in 1969 in Atlantic City by a group of six Atlantic City residents with the assistance of the Episcopalian Diocese of New Jersey. Today, JBRC is a comprehensive, multi-modality, Atlantic City based addiction treatment facility with 125 employees treating up to 700 patients at any given time. Under the direction of CEO Alan Oberman, JBRC operates two residential and four outpatient treatment programs, as well as mobile treatment with a 40 foot bus that dispenses methadone and Suboxone® to addicts at the local rescue mission and another inner city “spot”.

JBRC has been a customer of SMART for several years and uses the software throughout its facilities including the mobile unit. According to Alan Oberman, “The SMART software is easy to use, is very helpful for quality assurance, compliance, service reminders and for billing procedures and comparison of services. With a budget in excess of $8 million, we need to have continuous, up-to-date data to stay on track.”

Alan is a life-long resident of New Jersey. He holds a Masters in Social Work and is a licensed alcohol and drug clinician with more than twenty years experience in counseling, program administration and private practice. He believes strongly in the mission of JBRC to provide quality, scientifically based, individualized substance abuse treatment services to NJ residents for the reduction and elimination of the harm caused by substance abuse. Some of his goals for JBRC include establishing new residential facilities and expanding the outpatient services in other communities.

Michael Carruthers, Assistant Director SMART Software Division, stated, “We are very grateful for our relationship with the team at John Brooks Recovery Center. They say that life is a Journey; and when you work with Alan Oberman, you are sure to learn a thing or two – whether it is about Woodstock in 1969 (Alan has a classic picture in his office of him, long hair and all, enjoying being stuck in a traffic jam at Woodstock) or more importantly how to set a vision for your team and make it happen in a systematic way. We would also be missing the mark if we did not mention his right hand man, Bob Addesso, who helps keep the wheels moving in their large operation.”

JRBC is a fine example of the SMART customers who have taken a leadership role in the treatment of substance abuse in their respective areas. We are pleased to have the opportunity to work with Alan Oberman and the entire team at JBRC, and we look forward to assisting them as they continue to serve the residents of New Jersey.
